WWII - HEAVILY DAMAGED B-17G - IT MADE IT BACK!

Boeing B-17G-80-BO Flying Fortress, U.S. Army Air Forces serial number 43-38172, assigned to the 601st Bombardment Squadron (Havy), 398th Bombardment Group (Heavy), Eighth Air Force, based at Nuthampstead, Hertfordshire, England. On October 15, 1944, this was one of the aircraft attacking Cologne, Germany, when an antiaircraft shell went through the chin turret and exploded in the nose. The cockpit instrumentation and oxygen system were knocked out, but the pilot flew the plane back to base.
