Only Chinas 7 ft 7.85 inches (233.30 cm) Yao Defen (Yao Defen) and USAs 7 ft 7.25 inches (231.78 cm) Sandy Allen (Sandy Allen) are taller, and Maria is 2.5 inches (6.35 cm) taller than Polands Margo Dydek.
Maria was born into a very tall family: her father, Antonio Tintino da Silva (c. 1910 - c. 1973), was 7 ft 0.65 inches (215.00 cm) tall, her mother, Maria Rodrigues dos Santos, is 5 ft 11 inches (180.34 cm), her paternal grandmother was 6 ft 3 inches (190.50 cm), and her paternal aunt reputedly stood 7 ft 7 inches (231.14 cm) tall.
