When you consider all the firsts in the world you could become overwhelmed trying to remember when the first whatever came to be. Well, to get you up to date on all the firsts that have occurred in 2000’s so far here is the list.

2000
Colin Powell became the first black secretary of state in the United States.

2001
Condoleezza Rice became the first woman to serve as United States national security adviser.

2002
Halle Berry became the first black woman to win an Oscar for Best Actress.

Vonetta Flowers became the first black female United States athlete to win a gold medal in a Winter Olympics. She won the medal in the women's bobsleigh event, which was held on February 19.

Steve Fossett became the first balloonist to fly alone around the world when he landed in Australia on 4 July 2002.

2003
Tom Ridge became the first United States Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

Gene Robinson became the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church in the United States.

2005
Condoleezza Rice became the 1st black woman to serve as United States secretary of state.

2006
Anousheh Ansari became the first female "space tourist," on September 18, 2006. For her ride on the Russian Soyuz TMA-9 capsule, she paid $20 million. She was also attributed to being the first Iranian in space and the first Muslim woman in space.

2007
Tony Dungy became the first African-American coach to win a Super Bowl.

Keith Ellison became the first Muslim member of United States Congress.

Nancy Pelosi became the first female United States House Speaker.
